Our Schools

The goals of the Madagascar Ankizy Fund (MAF) are to build schools and provide basic health care in remote areas of northwestern Madagascar. To date we have built six schools and we still operate four of them (see below); the other two were donated to former Stony Brook University graduate students who now have their own field programs in Madagascar.

Berivotra

Primary school located in Berivotra and known as EPP Riambato (“The Stony Brook School”). Began as about 30 students and one teacher under the shade of a mango tree.  Two-room school built in 2001. Expanded in 2016 and again in 2022 to five classrooms plus a kindergarten classroom. Currently has 190 students.

Mitsinjo

Primary school located in Mitsinjo and known as EPP Mangasoavozo (“The Joel Strum Kenny School”). Built as a three-room school in 2008 with 120 students. School renovated and expanded to five classrooms in 2016. Currently has 238 students.

Ambovondramanesy

Secondary school located in Ambovondramanesy and known as CEG Ambovondramanesy (“The Smithtown South Secondary School”). Built as a four-room school with 150 students in 2011, with another room serving a school principal’s office/school library/teachers’ room).

Antanambao

Primary school located in Antanambao and known as EPP Antanambao Andranolava (“The Jack and Dorothy Radgowski School”). Built as a five-room school with 160 students in 2014. Currently has 380 students. In need of expansion.

We also support high-achieving students to continue their education in high school and university in the nearest major city, Mahajanga, with housing, food, supervision, and supplemental tutoring. Several students from the village in our primary field area (Berivotra), in which no children were receiving an education when we began working there in 1993, have now graduated with university degrees. Some have returned to the village and are working with MAF to contribute to education (e.g., as teachers) and healthcare (e.g., as midwives) and to develop sustainability initiatives.
